Kom som underløjtnant ind i den russiske marine i 1703, og som kaptajn foretog han i 1725 en ekspedition til Kamtjatka-halvøen. Fandt i 1728 med skibet &quot;Gavriil&quot; det efter ham opkaldte Bering-stræde mellem Asien og Amerika.<br /> <br /> Kortlagde under nye ekspeditioner 1734-39 den sibiriske Stillehavskyst frem til Japan. I 1741 opdagede han Alaska og Aleuterne. På tilbageturen anløb han med sit skib en ukendt og ubeboet ø, der nu er opkaldt efter ham.
