Han var dermed bror til Hans Friis (1625-1697), der skiftevis var yndet og i unåde ved den danske konge og adel. I 1642-1644 var han hofjunker, og i 1651-1656 var han lensmand på Vardøhus. I 1657 blev han ritmester.<br /> <br /> I maj 1666 blev han stiftamtmand over Aarhus Stift samt amtmand over [[Havreballegaard Amt|Havreballegaard]] og Kalø amter.
