Dannelsen af Heimdal havde sit afsæt i tidens stærke nationalisme, der fulgte efter krigene med Tyskland og den efterfølgende besættelse. Foreningen havde en forløber på Aalborg Katedralskole, hvor elever havde oprettet den æstetiske forening &#039;&#039;Ydun&#039;&#039;, som opfordrede andre latinskoler i landet til at tage initiativ til lignende foreninger. <br /> <br /> Foreningen afholdt fra begyndelsen foredrag, diskussionsaf­tener, digtoplæsninger og fester. Det var formålet at give elever et rum til at udfolde sig og tage ansvar uden indblandelse fra skolens lærere.
